The Ministry of Transport has developed a comprehensive plan for expanding the rail network, which includes building a railway between Abha and Jizan, Nabil Al-Amoudi, minister of transport, has told Al-Madina newspaper.
“Although projects like building a railway in the southern region require a lengthier construction period, they are part of the ministry’s main plan,” he added.
In a statement following the launch of the “Railway privatization opportunities” workshop on Sunday, Al-Amoudi pointed out that the workshop is the beginning of a railway privatization plan.
“The ministry is working on two approaches: The first includes the privatization of processes and maintenance of the current railways, and the second includes building new rails,” he added.
He said that the land bridge is one of the most important projects and will be offered to the private sector who will build and operate it.
“We are waiting for the private sector’s response on whether they would be able to handle this project or not,” he said.
