The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Senate rejected a project that aimed to obtain the recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
The Republican Left of Catalonia, a far-left party, presented the project to the Spanish senate calling for the official recognition of the SADR.
The project was rejected after making it through the doors of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Only the entity that proposed it and members of the left-wing political party, PODEMOS, voted for it. The majority of the House, dominated by the Popular Party (PP) voted against it, while the Socialist Party abstained.
Talking about this failed attempt to score points against Moroccan diplomacy, Bernabe Lopez Garcia, a specialist in Maghreb affairs, was quoted in Moroccan daily newspaper, Akhbar Al-Yaom, saying that the project enjoyed support in the senate, because the parties that proposed are of insignificant importance in Spain’s politics.
Speaking of PODEMOS and the other left-wing parties that backed the project, Lopez Garcia, who is Professor of Islamic Contemporary History at the University of Madrid, added that these parties will never come to power.” The professor added that the project they presented to the Senate was “a demagogic maneuver in order appeal to their bases.”
The failed attempt comes after Morocco made an historic diplomatic achievement, returning to the African Union. which it left in 1984 in reaction to the admission of the SADR
