Preparations for next October 23 elections were the focus of a meeting Wednesday between the Tunisian Workers' Union (UTT) Secretary-General Ismail Sahbani and a delegation of European Union observers for the Constituent Assembly elections led by Mr. Roberto Solazzo. Mr. Sahbani underlined that these elections represent the transitional stage so expected by Tunisia's people, stressing the importance of consultation between the different stakeholders to secure their success. The Union, he said, had encouraged its members to massively register to vote but decided not to run for these elections so as to leave its members free to choose whom they feel are most likely to defend workers' rights and the values of social justice. The EU delegation urged UTT leadership to ensure co-operation and coordination to guarantee the success of the observation mission.
