British comedian James Corden says his father was bursting with pride when he heard his boy was named the new host of The Late Late Show on CBS -- until, that is, he learned it would air at 12:30 a.m.
Corden talked about his dad's reaction to his hiring on Friday's edition of Late Show with David Letterman.
"I told him it was on at 12:30, and his whole face just dropped," Corden recalled.
"He couldn't even comprehend that anyone would even be watching television at 12:30, let alone making television that would be on. And he actually said... he just said the phrase '12:30' three times... He went: '12:30? 12:30?' Then he went, 'Half-past midnight?' He went, 'Well, what time does it end?' And I said, 'Well, it ends at 1:30,' and he went, 'Well, they might as well call it The Early Early Show."
"Well, he does have a point there," Letterman said, as the audience laughed.
"He was like, 'James, this sounds a terrible idea!'" Corden said.
Corden will make his debut as host of The Late Late Show March 9. He succeeds outgoing emcee Craig Ferguson, the program's star for the past 10 years. Ferguson announced his intention to leave the show during his April 28 broadcast, and will sign off Dec. 19. Corden will also soon be seen in the movie musical Into the Woods.
