The New Suez Canal planned to open on Thursday is a first step towards development, an overseer of the project said.
"The work in the Suez Canal Corridor Development project will start in the following day of the opening of the new waterway in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's directives," Mohab Mamish, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, said.
Mamish thanked all those who contributed to accomplishing the mega project in a record time.
He lauded President Sisi who took the decision to dig the waterway, the efforts of the Armed Forces' Engineering Authorities and all the workers at the site of the project.
He described the new canal as a miracle as certified by senior navigation experts in the world.
Egypt will inaugurate the new waterway on Thursday, which will massively increase the capacity of the existing canal and offer an important opportunity to boost the country’s struggling economy.
