Former UN secretary general Boutros Boutros-Ghali on Monday hailed the New Suez Canal to be opened on Thursday.
"The revenues of the new canal will broadly achieve sustainable development across the country," Ghali said in a statement obtained by MENA.
"The new project comes within Egypt's painstaking efforts for building a better future," he said.
He said the new canal and its related projects will create more job opportunities for Egyptian youth.
Egypt inaugurates the New Suez Canal on Thursday, which will massively increase the capacity of the existing canal and offer an important opportunity to boost the country’s struggling economy.
The 72-kilometer new project involves a 37-kilometer new waterway and deepening and expansion of the existing 145-year-old Suez Canal along a 35-kilometer stretch.
