Eight militants affiliated with the Brotherhood Hasm movement and other extremist groups were killed in a shootout with police in the area of Ard al-Liwa in Giza, south of Cairo.
A security source and eyewitnesses told Al Arabiya that security forces raided the militants’ hiding place on Sunday at dawn, adding that the militants were planning to launch terrorist attacks.
They opened fire on the police and a shootout ensued for around an hour, killing eight militants and injuring two police officers. One of the militants carried out a suicide bombing during the shootout.
Police found arms and ammunition in the militants’ possession and they are still looking for other militants in the area. Counter-terrorism forces arrived to the scene and are now preparing to raid a house which is believed to be another militants’ den.
