A 73-year-old man named Francisco Serna was shot dead by a police officer in the city of Bakersfield, California, during a late-night walk, local press reported Tuesday.
Francisco, a father of five, had an early stage of dementia. He was unarmed when being shot by a police officer in the 7900 block of Silver Birch Avenue, his son Rogelio Serna told Los Angeles Times.
Francisco was walking outside at late night due to a sleeping problem. He died on the scene after an officer fired several rounds at him, his son added.
Bakersfield police spokesman Sgt. Gary Carruesco said police arrived at about 12:30 a.m. local time on Monday (0830 GMT) when a witness pointed to a man in the driveway of a house.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave and the shooting is under investigation, according to Carruesco.
