Many of us will be eschewing the traditional tree in favour of something more contemporary as the hassle of hoovering the house twice a day to rid it of needles seems to have outweighed our desire for the smell of fresh forestry. German evangelist Martin Luther first decorated a fir tree in 1510 and Queen Victoria’s German-born husband, Albert, brought the trend in to the traditional Christmas set-up around 1840.
