In an armed forces full-honors retirement ceremony, Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey closed out 41 years of service, and Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. succeeded him as the highest ranking U.S. military officer, according to US Department of Defense.
Dempsey swore in Dunford here as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer.
President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Ash Carter were among the dignitaries who attended the retirement and change of responsibility ceremony.
