Army and police service in Sinai is considered "Jihad for the sake of Allah," said Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa.
In a statement on Sunday, Gomaa called on the Egyptian people to "stay steadfast in face of plots that target our faith and nation."
He called for unifying ranks behind President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the armed forces and police to uproot terrorism.
He offered condolences for those killed in terrorist acts that hit Sinai earlier in the day, wishing speedy recovery for the injured.
