The General Authority for Regulating the Telecommunications Sector (TRA) has represented the UAE at the 68th Radio Regulations Board meeting, a high-level council under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) umbrella that is composed of 12 members.
Nasser Bin Hammad, TRA Senior Manager International Affairs attended the meeting held recently at the ITU headquarters in the Swiss capital, Geneva.
Bin Hammad was elected to the Radio Regulations Board during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Busan, South Korea, where he received 108 total votes from the 176 voters present, to become the first individual on the GCC level elected for membership at the council.
"Our participation in this meeting and the UAE Radio Regulations Board membership reflects the leading and prestigious position of our country, as the Radio Regulations Council is one of the finest institutions within the International Telecommunication Union and most influential. This gives us the opportunity to reach new heights within a series of accomplishments achieved by the TRA on an international level. Through this participation, we look forward to showcase the region’s issues of concern in this field and finding the appropriate solutions for all that is related to the Radio Communications sector," said Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General.
"I would like to pay tribute to Mr. Hammad’s first participation in the Radio Regulations Board, which was largely successful, as he was chosen and named Deputy Chairman of the committee responsible for the formulation of the Radio Regulations. This within itself is a very important step, and the beginning of further successes on the level of council committees," he added.
Commenting with regards to the functions and tasks entrusted on him by the board, Nasser bin Hammad said, "The Radio Regulations Board is an integral part of the ITU, where members are elected through the Plenipotentiary Conference, a high-level conference held once every four years. As the members are elected and enter the Board, their performance is considered to be very neutral; therefore, the expected results from the performance and decisions of this Board are very neutral on the Union’s level."
