Algeria’s 4-2 victory against South Korea on June 22nd in Porto Algere for the second day of Group H of the 2014 World Cup, put an end to 16 years without success for the Arab teams, in the final phase of the World Cup, said Tuesday the International Football Federation, FIFA.
The first Arab victory in the world cup dates back to 1978 in Argentina. For their first game of their history, the Tunisians won against Mexico, who were more experienced and had won the CONCACAF Gold Cup a year earlier.
However, it remains Tunisia’s only success in their four participations in the World Cup.
Four years later, Algeria achieves an outstanding success in Spain against the world and Europe champion of the time.
After a fruitless period, a certain Rabah Madjer surprised Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and his teammates by opening the score on a dazzling attack. Rummenigge ties the score on the 67th minute but the Germans’ joy was short-lived as Lakhder Belloumi scored the winning goal shortly after,” said the FIFA.
The other Arab victories in the World Cup which have marked the history of the tournament were harvested by Morocco and Saudi Arabia.
