Polish swimmer Zawadka gets four-year doping ban

Polish swimmer Michal Zawadka was Wednesday slapped with a four-year doping suspension after testing positive to a banned drug at a meet in Australia.

Zawadka, best known for winning the 50m breaststroke at the 2014 Australian short course championships as a visiting swimmer, tested positive for the anabolic steroid clenbuterol and the stimulant methylhexaneamine last year.

His sample was taken at the NSW Short Course Championships last September as part of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority's remit to test foreign athletes who train or compete in Australia.

"Mr. Zawadka waived his right to a hearing and as a result, accepted the mandatory four-year sanction," said ASADA.

Because Swimming Australia was the authority that administered the test, they were also tasked with handing out the suspension.

"The fight against doping is a global one, and ASADA can and does test international athletes who train or compete in Australia," said ASADA chief Ben McDevitt.

"We are committed to ensuring our clean athletes compete on a level playing field."
