Forty smugglers were arrested Wednesday evening in Djanet (1850-km southeast of Algiers) by Army forces, who seized, in this region as well as in other border areas, products meant for smuggling, the ministry of National Defence said Thursday in a statement.
"As part of patrols to maintain security on the border and to fight organized crime, a People's National Army unit, from the operational sector of Djanet (4th military command), arrested yesterday evening, 26 August 2015, forty smugglers (11 Algerians and 29 from Niger)," the statement disclosed.
The army forces, during the patrols, "seized six all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), three metal detectors and 17 mobile phones."
Another Army unit, from the operational sector of El Oued, recovered near the border area of Ben Guecha," a herd of 35 goat heads meant for smuggling."
In addition, border guards at Bab El Assa (the second military command) "thwarted an attempt to smuggle 6710 litres of fuel."
