The take-off was cancelled of an Air Algerie flight bound for Algiers at the French city of Lille as a result of a technical error, according to the airline on Tuesday.
After only five minutes of taking to the runway, the aircraft was forced to swerve to the shoulder, but no damage was reported as a result of the incident, revealed the company statement.
The airline was forced to use a substitute aircraft after two hours went by with no solution found to the malfunction of what the company stressed was a "leased aircraft." Another internal Air Algerie flight heading to Ghardaia's Moufdi Zakaria Airport, located 510km south of the capital, was forced back to Algiers' Houari Boumediene Airport just 15 minutes from its take-off.
The aircraft turned back, with the airline citing a "malfunction and rising smoke" as the main rationale behind the decision.
The airline suffered a crash in northern Mali just three weeks ago leading to 116 deaths, to what the airline also said was a leased aircraft.
The plane which had taken off from the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou to Algiers had been leased from Spanish air charter company, Swift Air.
