A magnitude 5.5 quake hit the upper South Island and lower North Island of New Zealand but hasn't done any damage.
The quake occurred at a depth of 12 kilometer and was centred 10 kilometer east of Seddon, a small town in Marlborough district.
It was followed by several smaller quakes. A 3.0-magnitude struck 25 kilometer south of Hastings. It had a 27 kilometer depth.
