Jordan Seismological Observatory at dawn Monday registered three quakes in the port city of Aqaba whose strength ranging between light to moderate, with no damage or casualties reported.

In statements on Monday, Mahmoud Qariouti, director of the Jordan Seismological Observatory, the first quake, measuring 5.1, was centered at a depth of 13 kilometers south the Gulf of Aqaba and was felt by the residents of Aqaba city.

The second quake, recording 2.5 at the Richter Scale, took place at a depth of 18 kilometers on the northern western borders of Aqaba. The third measured 3.5 at the Richter Scale took place at 6.24 am (Jordan local time). 

Seismic activity is normal in the Jordan Rift Valley area, which extends from northern Jordan down to the Dead Sea and is part of the Great Rift Valley that stretches from the Taurus Mountains of Turkey down to the Zambezi Valley in southern Africa. In January, 1995, an earthquake registering 7.3 on the Richter scale was felt in Aqaba.
