A young Mexican immigrant builds a new life in the United States with the help of a local business owner, only to have that life disrupted by chaotic and dangerous events in the new novel by Jan Smolders, “Alone in Boca Raton” (published by iUniverse).
Mario Osorio, a young Mexican textile engineer, travels to the U.S. on a temporary work permit. When an attractive, middle-aged Floridian business owner named Erin Brown takes a strong personal interest in Mario and proposes to sponsor him for a green card and make him a manager in her textile business, the two enter a deal that allows Mario to legally stay in the U.S.
But matters complicate for Mario when he hears news of his mother, Gloria, escaping from her husband, José Mario, in Mexico and immigrating illegally to New Mexico with her two children, Anita and Roberto. Mario selflessly lends a helping hand to his mother and step-siblings by agreeing to temporarily hide them in a location close to his home, risking his citizenship in the process.
But their safe haven may not last long; Mario finds himself faced with drug traders, shady deals with a Mexican contractor and crooked lawyer, and the possible deportation of his family – all while romance blossoms between him and Jenny, Erin’s daughter.
In “Alone in Boca Raton,” Mario must face his demons while attempting to reunite his family and preserve the life he built for himself in Florida.
