From June 23rd to November 18th, the Region of Tuscany will host the Festival of the Ancient Roman Roads, a project promoted and organized by the Savings Bank of Florence (which also participated in the Festival of Travel June 5-10, and in the Festival of the Francigena Routes June-September). There are actually six Roman roads that represent the ancient and medival road networks, old pilgrimage routes that by now have become fields and countryside. In total, these routes expand over 560 km (348 mi), crossing the territory around Florence and brushing with Arezzo and Siena. The Roman Roads project equates to a valid alternative to the over-done itineraries of the main historic centres and museums of the Tuscan cities. It was realized with the efforts of the Region of Tuscany, the University of Florence, the Geographic Military Institute, the Tuscan branch of the Italian Alpine Club, Florence Savings and various dioceses and other local entities. The Roman Roads traverse some of the most beautiful tracts of land in Tuscany, from rolling hills and villages and castles, to splendid villas and abbeys, churches and monuments. And, of course, it does not miss the delicious trattorias and restaurants with gastronomic traditions over a hundred years old. Thanks in part to a modern, virtual information system to which the only Portal online for the Francigena Route, this project has an efficient instrument for promotion at the European level, as well as that of what was the ancient county of Florence. The Roman Roads Festival is now on a list made up of international cultural itineraries. The Festival offers a series of travel ideas for both day and night, from June till November, e.g. an urban itinerary in Florence, the streets in and around Bologna, or the route between Pisa and Francigena Nova. Each travel route can be undertaken on foot, some in bicycle, and all of them follow chosen themes according to the unique facets of each territory (i.e. nature, typical cuisine, historical events, artistic cultural heritage, and, with the aid of a specialized guide, antique trades and traditions).
