The idea of a girl living in an area that is quickly outgrowing its heritage is very similar to where author Lili Mahoney lives. As she watches her daughter grow, she creates a tale loosely based on the experiences of her young life. “Barefoot Pastures” (published by Xlibris) is a compelling story of a girl and her horse whose goal in life is simple - fight to hold onto their title as the best barrel racing team in the state. Life sometimes has other plans though.
The world is harsh and Tory has already learned many of its harder lessons. Her life has always been about control and the cowboy code, but will this year teach her the toughest lesson? Her own stubborn will may help her escape death, but will she come through unscathed? Can she remain true to who she is? In order to survive the pain, the cowardly men, the lies and the passion that will threaten to tear her apart, Tory will have to hold tightly to what has always been important – friendship, loyalty and Rusty.
“The book has everything that readers connect to,” Mahoney says, “A strong character cast, identifiable characters who deal with everyday struggles that relate to today’s issues, as well as a girl’s love for her horse and her family. With these values being most important, she is passionately seeking her place in the world.”
“Barefoot Pastures” reaches out to young female adults that are dealing with today’s hurtles, things such as building relationships, of getting through school and setting goals for the woman that they want to become. The author tells this coming-of-age story to advise readers while allowing them to have a little fun along the way.
