First created by Judson Dance Theatre (New York, USA) in the 1960s, 'I’ll Dance While You’re Dancing & We Will Have Danced Together' aims to democratise dance, creating active cooperation between dancers and introducing it to public spaces. The idea assumes the space does not have to be a dance theatre or an artistic venue but can be a street, building, crossroads or even a corridor or elevator. On Saturday 29 March, this postmodern dance and movement experiment will be performed on the street behind Teatro Eskendria in Alexandria.A performance has already taken place in an open-air enclosed area at the Greek campus of the American University in Cairo. But it is probably the Alexandria performance that will realise one of the group's core principles: bringing dance and movement to public spaces, reaching and surprising passersby. The dancers are expected to draw from each other's movements, develop them and adapt to their specific locations. As such, the dancers take inspiration from the locations they perform in and highlight their contextual characteristics. In the group's original concept, the locations can be distant from each other and the transfer of visual information can be achieved by video, creating a multidisciplinary parameter supporting the movement and data flow. The performance is part of the annual Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), a multidisciplinary festival taking place between 20 March and 11 April in Cairo and Alexandria.
