Tokyo shares closed the morning session lower on Thursday as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar hurt exporters and dampened market sentiment.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 48.15 points, or 0.25 percent, from Wednesday to 19,099.93.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 3.11 points, or 0.20 percent, to 1,524.66.
Decliners were led by transportation equipment, mining, electric power and gas issues.
