Tokyo shares fell slightly Wednesday morning on weak U.S. stocks overnight and sluggish oil prices despite a weaker yen against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 39.73 points, or 0.24 percent, from Tuesday to 16,689.31.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.64 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,319.35.
Decliners were led by mining, banking, and oil and coal product issues.
