Tokyo shares opened higher Friday on strong U.S. stocks overnight after U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would announce a "phenomenal" tax plan in the coming weeks.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average surged 323.23 points, or 1.71 percent, from Thursday to 19,230.90.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 21.94 points, or 1.45 percent, to 1,535.49.
Gainers were led by tire, mining as well as oil and coal issues.
