Tokyo shares opened higher Friday as buying took the upper hand after losses in the previous day.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 119.24 points, or 0.63 percent, from Thursday to 19,033.82.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.78 points, or 0.65 percent, to 1,520.19.
Gainers were led by nonferrous metal, marine transportation and insurance issues.
