Actor and Sean Malone, who appeared in 2007's Gone Baby Gone and 2010's The Fighter, died in Boston late Wednesday at the age of 54.
Malone had been in a coma for more than a week before the Boston Fire Department tweeted his death.
The actor's condition began on July 20, when off-duty firefighter Chris Flaherty saw Malone swim out too far from the M Street Beach in South Boston.
He is the brother of Deputy Fire Chief Scott Malone.
Flaherty proceeded to use a paddleboard to swim out to where he last saw Malone. At first, he could not find him. Then, a boat operated by three teenagers, Joey Binda, John Feeney and Elliot Chauvet, drew nearby. Flaherty, already 40 yards from the shore, called the teenagers' attention and enlisted their help in attempting to find Malone. He was found unconscious, was drawn aboard, where Feeney and Chauvet helped Flaherty perform CPR. He was driven quickly to the beach's bathhouse where two other off-duty firefighters were waiting with a defibrillator.
After more firefighters, police and other first responders arrived, Malone was taken to Boston Medical Center where he remained in a coma for a week until his death Wednesday.
