A child was killed and at least eight people were wounded in a hand grenade explosion in southern Karachi city on Tuesday night, said police.
According to initial police report, the blast took place near Islamic Research Center (IRC) Imambargah (worship place of Shia sect) when a women religious gathering was taking place. Most of the injured are women and children, said police.
Additional Inspector General (AIG) Police Ghulam Qadir told media that unknown miscreants hurled the cracker inside the Imambargah from over a nearby flyover bridge. He said that police were deployed at the Imambargah at the time of the blast.
The security forces immediately cordoned off the area and a search operation went underway. The injured were shifted to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The religious party representing Shia sect, Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) strongly condemned the attack demanding more security for Shias during the month of Muharram.
