A helicopter of the Libyan air force on Sunday attacked and sunk a dredger off Benghazi coast, Commander of the Libyan Air Force said on Monday.
"The dredger, which came from the west of the country and moved towards Benghazi, was destroyed. Another two vessels are on their way to the city and will be dealt with accordingly," said General Saqr Al-Jroshi, Commander of the Libyan Air Force.
Al-Jroshi said the vessel carried "terrorists and ammunition."
Spokesman of Battalion 309 deployed in west Benghazi confirmed the attack, saying that the vessel "came from Misrata and was attempting to enter Al-Mresa seaport of west Benghazi. It was targeted and destroyed immediately by the air force."
Since the launch of military operation "Dignity" by Major General Khalifa Haftar in May 2014, the Libyan army has been engaged in a contiguous violent fighting and battles against extremist groups in the city.
Libya has been witnessing a frayed political process after the 2011 turmoil which toppled its leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country is now juggling two rival parliaments and governments.
