The Deputy UN Secretary General Jan Eliasson on Tuesday conceded that the continuing of the crisis in Syria is devastating to the UN standing. He told a press conference one day after the closing of the General Assembly’s yearly High-Level debate, “I recognize that we, here at the UN, have to prove that we can present international solutions that work. That is the big issue, and of course, I will admit openly that the fact that the Syrian tragedy goes on day after day is very damaging for the standing of the UN, ‘’ reported the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA. Russia and China cast their vetoes three times during the past year on the crisis in Syria, paralyzing any action from the Security Council. On whether the role of the UN is diminishing in resolving conflicts from Syria to the Palestinian-Israeli question, to climate change, he said “you should look at the UN as the mirror of the World as it is, and not as we want it to be. We at the UN should diminish the distance between the World as it is and the World as it should be.”
