Cairo - MENA
Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker said that his ministry is having a problem of over-consumption hitting 43 percent compared to production.
In statements while participating in a workshop on the challenges of energy in Egypt on Thursday, he added that consumption in summer is higher by 3,000 MWs compared to winter. This is why there were power outages last summer.
He attributed the power problem to a lack of fuel by 53 percent and lack of maintenance of power plants. He further noted that power consumption in Egypt is higher than production by 6.3 percent.
He said that one of the problems is restructuring the power pricing while maintaining subsidy for the poor categories.
