Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), said that the UAE is a leading country transitioning to the use of renewable energy, and that taking this direction is not incompatible with it being one of the largest producers and exporters of oil in the world.
The IRENA Director-General made these comments yesterday, in an interview with the daily Arabic-language newspaper Al Itihad, ahead of IRENA's fifth meeting which will be held in the capital, and expected to draw 80 energy ministers from around the world.
"IRENA's presence in Abu Dhabi is not incompatible with the country being the third largest oil producer and exporter in the world," said Amin.
The Director-General explained that creating new sources of energy indicates how oil and gas producers and exporters are planning for the future, and putting alternative energy productions in consideration.
He went on to say that IRENA seeks to transform the use of energy from traditional sources to renewable and clean energy that do not emit pollutants into the environment.
"The environmental situation in the world is very critical and we must take quick action to move towards clean, renewable energy," he said.
