An upbeat forecast from Wal-Mart Stores lifted the Dow to a fresh record Tuesday as US stocks finished modestly higher ahead of major earnings reports.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 22,833.16, up 0.3 percent and nearly 60 points above the record set last week.

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 0.2 percent to 2,550.82, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.1 percent to 6,585.93.
