Patricia weakened to a tropical storm over north-central Mexico on Saturday, US forecasters said, one day after it became the strongest hurricane on record.

The storm packed maximum sustained winds of 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour and continued to produce heavy rain as it churned some 55 kilometers northeast of Zacatecas, the US National Hurricane Center said.
