The end of the world (according to perfume house Byredo) smells of hot metal, warm wood and a splash of rare black raspberry. Doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Inspired by the farcical but worrisome Mayan apocalypse that we all managed to survive (despite a few hangovers) Byredo have just launched their timely Apocalyptic candle. Perfumer Ben Gorham (Canadian-Indian ex-basketball player and proud beardist) is fascinated by the mythical symbolism attached to the Mayan apocalypse, and so challenged himself to create a new home fragrance. It has a unique warm, woody fragrance based on ancient papyrus and smouldering birch with hot metal notes and rare, black raspberry from Oregon. Buying candles from a fragrance house means they use real perfume to scent the wax rather than synthetic fragrance so you'll smell it in every room, for longer. www.byredo.com
