A moderate earthquake, registering 5.3 on the Richter scale, shook the Philippine main island of Luzon on Sunday.

Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the quake occurred at 9:40 p.m. off Bolinao town in Pangasinan.

"We don't expect significance damage because the quake happened offshore," Solidum said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the Philippine tremor has a magnitude of 5.7 and struck at a depth of 23 km.

The quake was also felt in the Philippine capital of Manila. This reporter was sitting at the desk, while the building swayed. The tremor lasted about 10 seconds.
