Workers at all animal-related facilities, pet stores and zoos are required to follow the federal law on animal welfare and the related technical and health rules. The Ministry of Environment and Water stressed the need for all workers in animal farms, breeding centres, zoos, pet stores, vet hospitals and shops that sell ornamental fish, reptiles, birds and mammals to adhere by the animal welfare legislation and its bylaws with regard to technical and health rules needed to be provided in these facilities. The UAE had introduced the animal welfare law and its executive bylaws to protect animals from abuse and neglect. Hence it has taken several steps to ensure the welfare of animals in the country. The animal welfare law deals specifically with respecting animal welfare in the country, and highlights the need to provide animals with adequate diet, safe transport and medical treatment. It also calls for making sure that animals are protected from any form of abuse such as being used in scientific experiments and unauthorised exhibitions or fairs. Workers and keepers in animal facilities must be professionals and competent to deal with animals. Owners and keepers of animals shall take steps to ensure the welfare of animals and to see that they are not caused any unnecessary pain, suffering or injury. Animals must be given protection from the weather and predators and be fed a wholesome diet appropriate for their age and species, and receive a continuous supply of fresh drinking water each day, the law says.
