A Sons of Anarchy spinoff is in early development at FX.
Series creator Kurt Sutter is overseeing the project, which will reportedly focus on the Mayans Motorcycle Club and take place in Northern California. Sutter would serve as executive producer but find someone else to act as showrunner.
In the original series, the Mayans are an Oakland-based group led by president Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera). The Mayans begin as rivals to Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and SAMCRO, but eventually partner with the club on business and personal matters.
Sons of Anarchy had a successful seven-season run from 2008 to 2014. The show follows Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), son to SAMCRO co-founder John Teller (Victor Newmark), as he deals with his personal life and obligations to the motorcycle club.
Sutter is currently focused on his new FX series, The Bastard Executioner. The period drama will premiere Sept. 15, starring Lee Jones as a 14th century English knight who becomes an executioner. Sutter's wife and Sons of Anarchy actress Katey Sagal will co-star.
