Libya’s Ministry of Electricity has ordered the construction of a solar panel plant in the south of the country, Undersecretary for the Ministry Dr Mohammed Ali has announced.It is hoped the factory will provide responsible, sustainable
energy infrastructure for Libya, a country sitting on the fifth largest oil reserve in the world. The Ministry of Electricity expressed his hopes that the plant would also provide jobs for young Libyans.
Speaking to the LANA News Agency, Dr Ali told how the first foundation stone for the new factory had been laid in Obari on Wednesday by the General Electric Company of Libya [GECOL]. It would provide 650 megawatts of power to southern Libya, supplying a large proportion of its power needs and enhancing national network capabilities.
Speaking to the LANA News Agency, Dr Ali said: “This station is considered a major achievement in the electricity sector and within the Ministry’s plan to develop energy sources in the southern region.”
It is not clear yet when the power station will be completed.
