Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller of the band Sleigh Bells are suing Demi Lovato over copyright infringement, BBC reports.
The pair claim that Stars, a bonus track on her 2015 album, Confident, copies a significant amount of their track, Infinity Guitars.
In documents submitted to a court in California, lawyers representing Sleigh Bells say they are seeking “substantial profits” from the defendant in damages.
Issues between Sleigh Bells and Demi Lovato first became public last year.
Legal documents state: “A comparison of the two songs reveals that, at the very least, the combination of the hand claps and bass drum, structured as three quarter beats and a rest, with the bass drum providing a counter-rhythm to the hand claps, is at least substantially similar in both works.”
At the time, the song’s producers denied sampling the tracks. “We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato’s song Stars,” Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk said in a joint statement.
“Demi was also not involved with the production. She only wrote the top line.”
Both are named in the legal documents as defendants, along with Demi Lovato.
Sleigh Bells seek “a permanent injunction prohibiting the reproduction, distribution, sale, public performance or other use or exploitation of Infinity Guitars” by those named in the lawsuit.
