Thursday will mark the first day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan in Egypt, the country's Mufti Shawqi Allam said.

"Wednesday is the last day of Shaaban, the eighth month in the Islamic calendar, and Thursday is the first day of Ramadan," Allam said during a popular ceremony organized by Darul Iftaa.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.
