Temple Hibis

Al Wadi Al Gadid governorate will conduct the first experiment to study the phenomenon of the sun illuminating the inner sanctuary of Temple Hibis, located just over two kilometers north of the modern city of Kharga.

In statements on Sunday, Director General of the Egyptian Antiquities at Al Wadi Al Gadid Bahgat Abu Sdeira said the sun illumination of the inner sanctuary of the temple for seven minutes is a matter that should be deliberately studied and it could increase the tourism promotion for the whole region.

Temple of Hibis remains the only witness to the scope and nature of the building activities during the Late Period, before the start of the Ptolemaic Period.

The temple was mostly dedicated to God Amun who was also known as the " Lord of Hibis". On one side of the temple you have the adaptation of Theban theology and on the other we find that a lot of rooms have been dedicated to Osiris.

The temple, built by Darius I for the fertility god Amun, is the largest of the Persian temples that was built in Egypt.Constructed of local limestone around the 6th century BC, the Temple of Hibis sits atop the site of an 18th dynasty settlement of Saites.
