In celebration of its one year anniversary, Egypt's only art-house cinema Zawya is holding a free screening of Damien Chazelle's Whiplash which was nominated for several awards including the best picture at this year's Academy Awards.
Whiplash, a drama centered around a young drummer studying at a music school in New York and his strict mentor, is the 22nd film to be released by Zawya. The film stars Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons, who scooped the best supporting actor award at the Oscars last month.
The film also won the awards for best editing and best sound mixing.
The screening will take place on 18 March. Organisers are allocating 100 free tickets to be handed to guests on first come first serve basis.
Zawya is the brainchild of Misr International Films, the film production company set up by renowned late Egyptian director Youssef Chahine.
Throughout the past year, Zawya has brought to the large screen a range of local and regional films otherwise inaccessible to the public. It held a number of retrospectives celebrating cinema giants, and has made viewing documentaries and short films a more common activity for cinema goers.
"Zawya looks forward to the upcoming year and the chance to realise its ambitions of increasing its releases and events both in and outside of Cairo, expanding its 'Education and Cinema' program, adding to art-house cinema exposure and ultimately its audience members," according to the press release.
