An Egyptian Court on Wednesday upheld a five-year jail sentence against prominent opposition activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, official news agency MENA reported.

Egypt's Court of Cassation, highest appeals court, confirmed a prior verdict by a criminal court that ruled Abdel Fattah had protested illegally, endangered the public interest, and stole a police radio.

The ruling is final and cannot be appealed.

The case dates back to November 2013, when Abdel Fattah along with others cut the road leading to the Shura Council, Upper House of the Parliament, and organized protests without prior license and assaulted the security men.

Another 18 persons were sentenced to 3 years in the same case.

Abdel Fattah, a leading member of the movement that masterminded the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011, also faces another ruling in December over accusations of insulting the judiciary.
