Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria

Georgia will not pursue direct dialogue with Russia currently, Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria said Thursday.

"We do not see the direct dialogue with Russia as a reasonable decision as we do not observe any particular actions to ease the tension along the border," Izoria was quoted as saying at a press conference here by local Inter Press Service news agency.

However, the minister pointed out the dialogue between the two countries on the improvement of bilateral relations should be continued in other ways.

"The dialogue should be continued within the framework of international formats in order to achieve the particular result about the border situation," Izoria said.

Georgia cut diplomatic ties with Russia after a brief armed conflict in August 2008 over the control of the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

High-level representatives of the two governments have held several unofficial meetings in Prague to improve relations since the end of 2012.
