Italy’s Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that it had deported an Algerian national from its territories on the basis of national security.“He has a criminal record and is active in a terrorist group that espouses an Islamic ideology,” the interior ministry said on Saturday.
“Algerian citizen Bashir Hajjaj, 36, was deported by the Belgian authorities from their territory for three years on May 8, and then left Algeria for Italy, where he illegally arrived on the island of Sardinia last September 24,” the statement said. “He then moved to the capital Rome, where he initiated criminal activities in cooperation with friends in the Algerian community,” the Italian Interior Ministry added.
Italian authorities also said that Hajjaj was arrested and held last Thursday in the capital of Rome thanks to data transmitted by the international police on his identity on October 4, after investigations showed that it he intended to return to Belgium again.
According to them, phone calls between the Algerian national and his wife, a resident of Belgium, where he spoke of his intention to do commit an imminent attack there.
