Around 54 thousands residents of the southern German city of Augsburg had to be evacuated from their homes on Sunday as authorities successfully defused a 1.8-ton bomb.

    Explosive specialists took hours to defuse the World War II bomb after what seemed like the largest post-war evacuation the country went through.

    After approximately four hours, two explosives specialists were able to defuse the bomb, a police spokesman said. They were the only people allowed within a 1.5-kilometer (0.9-mile) radius of the car park construction site where the dud-bomb was discovered, the (dpa) reported.

    The British bomb was discovered on Tuesday during construction work. A protective barrier about a meter high has been built around the bomb in case it explodes.

    Unexploded bombs dating back to the aerial bombardments of Germany during World War II are still frequently found. Many local authorities have teams working full-time to detect and defuse them.
