US House of Representatives

Republicans will maintain control of the US House of Representatives in the legislative elections that took place in parallel with the presidential election, US media reported.

Republicans, who have held the House since 2011, went into the elections holding 246 seats to the Democrats' 186. Since 2014, Republicans dominate the Senate, which plays a crucial role in the mechanism of naming the Supreme Court judges and senior government officials.  Till Tuesday Republicans had 54 senators to 46 for the Democrats.

If the election leads to a 50-50 party split in the Senate, the Vice-President's vote will give the majority to his or her party.
