former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly

Egypt police arrested on Tuesday the fugitive former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, who was the most prominent official serving under the ousted president Hosni Mubarak, official news agency MENA reported.

Al-Adly, who has been sentenced to seven years in prison on corruption charges, hasn't handed himself over to the authorities, MENA said.

Al-Adly was supposed to turn himself in after the case in April but he disappeared.

The former interior minister is due back in court for an appeal in January.

After the ouster of Mubarak in 2011, al-Adly and his top aides were facing trials on charges including murdering protesters, illegal gains and money laundering.

He was cleared of all charges except those of embezzling the interior ministry budget and using soldiers for personal work.
