The Interior Ministry said that prisoner Ahmed el Khatib, who is currently under medical supervision in Cairo's Abbassia Fever Hospital, is receiving all medical care.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry added that Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar agreed on his family's request to treat him at a private hospital at their own expense.
Khatib was diagnosed with rare parasitic infection "Leishmaniasis". The parasite infects the body's internal organs, such as the liver and spleen, and causes fever, weight loss and anemia (a low level of red blood cells). The disease is mainly spread by infected "sand fly" bites.
Khatib, who was a student of bio-technology at Misr University for Science and Technology, was arrested in 2014 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for belonging to a terrorist group.
